Shayna
Shayna had seen the truth in Pierceâs eyes the night before when he said heâd rather die than lose her. She hadnât slept well because of it. Now, she lay on her side and watched him sleep. Yes, he had fae blood, something for which she was grateful. His added strength would come in handy during battles. But could she allow herself to love him?
A lock of hair had fallen over his forehead. She smoothed it away, careful not to touch him lest he wake. A warrior didnât bond with anyone in her world. Their lives did not lend themselves to romance because of the risk of leaving behind loved ones. She sighed and rolled over to her back.
She did love him. Now what? If only she had someone to advise her. She studied him. His eyes were open. His lips spread in a sexy smile.
âI love sleeping next to you,â he said. âI intend to enjoy it for as long as I can.â He propped himself on one elbow. âWhere are the others?â
âDeema has appointed herself Paysonâs guardian. Theyâve gone to her place. Marshal elected to go home.â
His eyes widened. âIsnât he in danger, too?â
âI havenât felt so.â She flung aside the cotton sheet sheâd covered with. âOnce I do, weâll make arrangements.â
âWhatâs on the agenda today?â
âA normal work day for you until I can find another secure location for us to train.â She stood and wrapped her robe around herself.
âIt would make things easier for me if you wore a nightgown.â
She glanced over her shoulder. âWhy? We donât wear them in my world. Oneâs body is nothing to be ashamed of.â
âOh, Iâm not ashamed, sweetheart.â He grinned and rolled over to his back. âBut I am tortured.â
âOh.â Her face heated. Tonight, sheâd cover herself as the humans did when they slept. How could she have been so insensitive, especially after knowing how Pierce felt about her?
An hour later, in response to a call from the chief demanding they come see him, Shayna marched down the hall of the precinct, the three detectives behind her, and Deema bringing up the rear. Heads turned as they headed for the chiefâs office.
âStay here,â she told the others. âPierce, you come with me. The chief isnât alone.â She pushed open the door.
Radella gave a cold smile from where she sat across from the chief. âOh, youâre in trouble now,â she sang.
âWhere have you been, Cochran?â The chief planted his hands flat on his desk and pushed to his feet. âYou havenât been reinstated as detective for long and here you go, rough-handling civilians again. This time a woman! And you, Special Agent Sky, are even worse.â
âSir?â Shayna glanced at Pierce.
âLook at her.â He pointed to Radella.
Shayna glanced at the still-smiling vampire. âYes?â
âYouâve beaten her.â He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and mopped his brow. âA once beautiful face is scarred for life.â
âI donât see it, sir.â Pierce stood at attention.
Shayna glanced under the desk, narrowing her eyes at the tiny demon sitting there.
