Shayna

Shayna had seen the truth in Pierce’s eyes the night before when he said he’d rather die than lose her. She hadn’t slept well because of it. Now, she lay on her side and watched him sleep. Yes, he had fae blood, something for which she was grateful. His added strength would come in handy during battles. But could she allow herself to love him?

A lock of hair had fallen over his forehead. She smoothed it away, careful not to touch him lest he wake. A warrior didn’t bond with anyone in her world. Their lives did not lend themselves to romance because of the risk of leaving behind loved ones. She sighed and rolled over to her back.

She did love him. Now what? If only she had someone to advise her. She studied him. His eyes were open. His lips spread in a sexy smile.

“I love sleeping next to you,” he said. “I intend to enjoy it for as long as I can.” He propped himself on one elbow. “Where are the others?”

“Deema has appointed herself Payson’s guardian. They’ve gone to her place. Marshal elected to go home.”

His eyes widened. “Isn’t he in danger, too?”

“I haven’t felt so.” She flung aside the cotton sheet she’d covered with. “Once I do, we’ll make arrangements.”

“What’s on the agenda today?”

“A normal work day for you until I can find another secure location for us to train.” She stood and wrapped her robe around herself.

“It would make things easier for me if you wore a nightgown.”

She glanced over her shoulder. “Why? We don’t wear them in my world. One’s body is nothing to be ashamed of.”

“Oh, I’m not ashamed, sweetheart.” He grinned and rolled over to his back. “But I am tortured.”

“Oh.” Her face heated. Tonight, she’d cover herself as the humans did when they slept. How could she have been so insensitive, especially after knowing how Pierce felt about her?

An hour later, in response to a call from the chief demanding they come see him, Shayna marched down the hall of the precinct, the three detectives behind her, and Deema bringing up the rear. Heads turned as they headed for the chief’s office.

“Stay here,” she told the others. “Pierce, you come with me. The chief isn’t alone.” She pushed open the door.

Radella gave a cold smile from where she sat across from the chief. “Oh, you’re in trouble now,” she sang.

“Where have you been, Cochran?” The chief planted his hands flat on his desk and pushed to his feet. “You haven’t been reinstated as detective for long and here you go, rough-handling civilians again. This time a woman! And you, Special Agent Sky, are even worse.”

“Sir?” Shayna glanced at Pierce.

“Look at her.” He pointed to Radella.

Shayna glanced at the still-smiling vampire. “Yes?”

“You’ve beaten her.” He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and mopped his brow. “A once beautiful face is scarred for life.”

“I don’t see it, sir.” Pierce stood at attention.

Shayna glanced under the desk, narrowing her eyes at the tiny demon sitting there.
